A plan to build a new police station for the Salinas Police Department has been in the works for years, and on Tuesday night, it got a big green light from the City Council.

The new police station will be located in the Alisal Marketplace at 312 East Alisal St., and replace the existing police station that was built in 1958 on Lincoln Street.

Measure G provided the necessary funds, estimated at $49 million, to move forward with the project.

On Tuesday the City Council voted to enter into a pre-development agreement with construction management firms Griffin Structures and Swinerton Builders, along with architects LPA Inc.

“This will be a big step forward,” said Police Chief Adele Frese. “Our job has grown and changed a lot over the decades, with new technologies, new policing techniques, and much more. A modern station is a key part of fulfilling today’s mission.”

“Griffin/Swinerton and LPA bring long resumes of successful public projects of this kind,” said Assistant Public Works Director Don Reynolds. “Together they’ve designed police stations locally and in southern California.

The city and the development team are working toward opening the new police station in October of 2019.
